What to do in Rabat: the capital’s must-sees
Kasbah of the Oudayas, Hassan Tower, Chellah, the medina: our guide to Rabat’s top sights and how to visit them easily by car from Témara or Salé.
Morocco’s capital and a UNESCO World Heritage city, Rabat blends historic monuments, gardens and a seafront. Here are the must-sees, and how to plan your visit without wasting time on transport.
The Kasbah of the Oudayas
Perched above the mouth of the Bouregreg, the Kasbah of the Oudayas is Rabat’s historic heart: blue-and-white lanes, an Andalusian garden and a Moorish café overlooking the ocean and Salé. A must, ideally in late afternoon for the light.
Hassan Tower and the Mausoleum of Mohammed V
The 12th-century, unfinished Hassan Tower minaret rises over an esplanade of columns facing the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, a masterpiece of Moroccan craftsmanship. Entry to the mausoleum is free; modest dress is required.
The Chellah necropolis
Both a Roman site and a Merinid necropolis, Chellah is a peaceful, overgrown spot with storks nesting on the ruins. A timeless interlude just minutes from the centre.
The medina, seafront and gardens
Rabat’s medina, calmer than those of Fès or Marrakech, is a pleasure to wander on foot among artisans and markets. For greenery, the botanical test gardens and the corniche round off the visit.
- Medina and Rue des Consuls (crafts, carpets).
- Seafront and Rabat beach, facing the Kasbah.
- Botanical test gardens for a green break.
Visiting Rabat from Témara or Salé
The sights are fairly close together, but city-centre parking can be tricky at peak times. A rental car lets you reach the capital whenever you like, then continue on to Salé, Témara or the coast.
We deliver your car free of charge in Témara, Rabat and Salé, as well as at the Rabat-Salé and Mohammed V airports.
